Horsemanship

This non-riding class focuses on proper care and safety around horses.  In this class, you'll learn how to approach a horse, learn about polo tack, as well as basic horse care.  Safety issues for both rider and mount are covered.  If you are brand-new to equestrian sports, we will help you develop a higher comfort-level around your new teammates.  If you're an experienced rider but new to polo, you'll learn new things to look-out for that are specific to polo ponies.

This classes is required for all new PPS students.

Beginner Package of Three Lessons

The class for beginners focuses on developing basic riding skills and mallet-work.  In this half day class, you will learn how to properly sit on a polo pony, how to swing the mallet and the rules of play.  This is a walk- and trot-only class, and is taught in the at Red Eagle Arena.

This class is appropriate for those with no or limited riding experience, and those who wish to learn in a no-pressure, non-competitive environment.  The beginner class is supportive, warm, and friendly.

Intermediate

The class for intermediate riders plays at a faster pace than the beginner's class.  Intermediate riders walk, trot, and canter, and are comfortable with (at least) off-side mallet strokes.  This class focuses on the rider's seat at faster paces, hitting while moving, and developing a more thorough understanding of the rules.  Safety for horse and rider are stressed.

This class is appropriate for those who are comfortable at the canter.  These classes are spirited, yet the focus in on developing good play rather than keeping score during chukkers.

Advanced

The class for advanced riders plays like a mini polo match.  Advanced riders know the rules of play, are comfortable at all gaits, and are proficient with the mallet.  This class focuses on developing proper team-play.  Safety for horse and rider and stressed.

This class is appropriate for advanced riders only.  These classes are competitive, but dangerous play is prohibited.  Advanced players play prior to Potomac Polo Club "Twilight Polo" matches on Saturday, and on Sunday afternoons in PPS League matches.

Open Chukkers

This class is open to beginner-plus through advanced players.  This is an open-ended class that gives students time to work on riding and mallet skills, stick-and-ball, and deepen their understanding of match rules.  This class is intended to allow all students to practice the topics covered in lessons.
