Me, playing polo?
Can I really learn to
play polo? Don't you have to be a
billionaire? I've only been on a horse once or
twice, how safe is it? Do I have to be a certain
size, or have a certain body-type?
If you ask them, most students
will say that they had these same questions before they
started at PPS. The first answer, of course, is
yes, you can learn to play! |
The
Washington Post's reporter took lessons with us and fills you in on just
how easy and fun it is to learn to play polo with the Potomac Polo School.

As far as being a billionaire goes, let's face it, it
helps! But those new to polo won't need their own
string of horses to get started. Someone new to
skiing wouldn't necessarily purchase a mountain-side
lodge right away, right? Instead, they'll rent
skis and stay in a hotel. PPS provides aspiring
polo players with this same type of introduction. You
don't need to buy or even lease a horse right away
(although eventually you might want to). All you'll need
is a decent pair of boots and an adventurous attitude
and you are ready to start your polo lessons.
Do your riding skills need to
be, um, developed? Don't worry. Our polo school
horses
know the drill. They are gentle and
take care of new riders. You, on the other hand, need to be in
good health, in decent shape (ok, if you can put your groceries away
without passing out that's good enough!), and be willing and able to
listen and take instruction during your polo lessons.
If you've ever spent time around a barn before, you know that safety
is always a priority. We take your safety and that of your equine
teammate very seriously. But the simple truth is that there
is risk involved in all equestrian sports and we won't try to
tell you that there's no risk in polo. We will need you to fill
out the student application
and waiver prior to your first class. You should be honest with
yourself about the risks, but at the same time know that most PPS students
feel comfortable by starting slow developing a higher comfort-level over
time. With a little perseverance, you can expect to steadily
improve your confidence and ability.
Polo is a two-skill sport - riding and hitting. However, while
hitting the "long ball" looks (and feels!) mighty impressive,
it's the better riders who are the real standouts. For this
reason, polo is not a
sport where the bigger you are, the more effective you
will be. As a result, PPS
classes
are a mix of men
and women, age ranges, and all sizes and body types.
Ready to saddle-up? Give us a call to enroll

See you in the arena!
